CAREER:

Salman made his acting debut in the 1988 film Biwi Ho To Aisi where he played a supporting role. His first leading role in a Bollywood movie was in a romantic film "Maine Pyar Kiya" (1989). The film went on to become one of India's highest grossing films. It also won him a Filmfare Best Debut Award, (1990) and a nomination for the Filmfare Best Actor Award. The film also marked the debut of director Sooraj R. Barjatya.

His second venture with director Sooraj Barjatya, "Hum Aapke Hain Koun (1994)", remains one of Indian cinema's highest grossing films ever.

Some of his biggest box office hits include Sanam Bewafa (1991), Saajan (1991), Karan Arjun (1995), Judwaa (1997), Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya (1998), Hum Saath-Saath Hain: We Stand United (1999), Biwi No.1 (1999), Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999), Tere Naam (2003), Mujhse Shaadi Karogi (2004) and No Entry (2005).

Khan has starred in the highest earning films of 1989, 1991, 1994, 1999, and 2005.

He is scheduled to appear in his first Hollywood movie, Marigold: An Adventure in India, which will open in the U.S. in August 2007.

Salman's fan-following can perhaps be measured from the fact that he is unarguably the biggest draw at Bollywood musical stage shows across the globe.

It is his self-deprecating humour, however, that turns even the uninitiated into his die-hard fan.

PERSONAL LIFE:

Salman is the eldest son of celebrated screenwriter Salim Khan and his wife Salma Khan. His stepmother is Helen (actress), a famous yesteryear Bollywood dancer and actress. He has two brothers, Arbaaz Khan and Sohail Khan, and two sisters, Alvira and Arpita. Alvira is married to actor/director Atul Agnihotri.

The actor is known to be involved in several charities and many swear by his generosity.

Despite tumultuous relationships with ex-girlfriends Aishwarya Rai, Somy Ali and Sangeeta Bijlani, he is regarded as Bollywood's most eligible bachelor. Currently said to be dating Katrina Kaif.

Legal troubles:

* September 28, 2002. Salman was arrested for rash and negligent driving. He was under the influence of alcohol and his car veered onto a sidewalk outside a bakery in Mumbai. One person who was sleeping on the sidewalk died and three others were injured. Charges of culpable homicide were laid against him, but later dropped ). However, some legal action in this case appears to be on-going.

*February 17, 2006. Salman was sentenced to one year in prison for hunting an endangered species, the Chinkara. The sentence was stayed by a higher court during appeal.

* April 10, 2006. Salman was handed a five year jail term for hunting the endangered Chinkara. He was remanded to Jodhpur jail, and remained there until April 13, when he was granted bail.

Relationship troubles:

* His turbulent relationship with Aishwarya Rai filled gossip columns. Her parents lodged a complaint against him and he was thrown off a movie set on which Ms. Rai was filming.

* In 2005, news outlets released what was said to be an illicit copy of a mobile phone call recorded in 2001 by the Mumbai police. It appeared to be a call in which he threatened his ex-girlfriend, Aishwarya Rai, in an effort to force her to appear at social events held by Mumbai crime figures. The call featured boasts of

connections to organized crime and derogatory comments about other actors. The alleged tape was tested in the Government's Forensic lab in Chandigarh, which concluded that it was a fake.

*Arrested and jailed for poaching endangered wild animals after allegedly shooting a rare black antelope near Jodhpur. [12 October 1998]

*Arrested for culpable homicide following the death of a man in a car accident in Bombay. Mr Khan was involved in an incident in which several homeless people were hit by a car in an area of north Bombay. The film star has been charged with "culpable homicide not amounting to murder". He also faces charges of drunk driving and not having a valid licence. If convicted, he could be jailed for up to 10 years. [October 2002]

*Had a well publicised affair with Aishwarya Rai which lasted 2 years. Apparently his endless tantrums traumatized her enough to give a press conference in spring 2003 where she declared that she would never work with him again for personal reasons.

* Was accused in another press conference in spring 2003 by Vivek Oberoi to have called the latter 41 times during one night and threatened him with death as well.

*Brother of Sohail Khan, Arbaaz Khan, Alvira Khan and Arpita Khan.

*Not only is he a health freak, he also loves to initiate people who aren't as health-conscious as himself into workouts. He forced co-star Anil Kapoor to work out at the gymnasium every day. While Saif Ali Khan and Hrithik Roshan are his early trainees.

* Model turned actress Malaika was his sister-in-law. Actor turned director Atul Agnihotri was his brother-in-law.
